Leadership Nugget - Teammates - Jimmy Johnson

Go with players you believe in, who fit your personality and your system. – Jimmy Johnson

In sport and business alike, finding good team chemistry is tough.

I like this quote because it calls out three attributes of a teammate which are hard to fake.

Breaking this quote down

Go with players you believe in: Similar to trust belief is earned. As a new team, you start out with a base level of belief in your teammates' abilities but if actions are consistently counter to the team's objectives, that belief fades.

Go with players who fit your personality: “Fit” is not a synonym for identical. Diversity brings out the best in each of us. “Fit” means different but in harmony. Teammates are like puzzle pieces they are going to be different but if they are any good they will find a way to fit together.

Go with players who fit your system: Fitting into a system means knowing your role and playing it well. If you don't like your role, take steps to change it or get off the team. Your leaders should be looking for your fit with the team as well.

You can throw five guys on the court with the same color jerseys but that doesn't make them a team.

Team chemistry must be developed and nurtured but good teammates make that process easier.
